New building of the M3 research center handed over to the university
The new building of the M3 Research Center for Malignoma, Metabolome and Microbiome on the Schnarrenberg in Tübingen was jointly handed over to the University of Tübingen by the State Secretary of Finance, Gisela Splett, and the Minister of Science, Petra Olschowski, on Monday, July 3, 2023. Malignancy is the term used to describe a cancerous tumor. Metabolome refers to the metabolic properties of a cell. Microbiome stands for the totality of all microorganisms in humans.
"The energy- and space-efficient new building offers optimal spatial working conditions for the University of Tübingen's innovative medical research work. During construction, we attached great importance to the conservation of resources. For example, recycled concrete was used almost exclusively in the shell of the building," said State Secretary of Finance Gisela Splett.
Science Minister Petra Olschowski: "The Medical Faculty and the entire University of Tübingen have the opportunity to establish a completely new research direction in the new M3 building, which synergistically unites three previously separate subject areas: malignoma, metabolome and microbiome research. This interdisciplinary approach ideally complements the research environment in Tübingen and offers interesting perspectives for young researchers as well as for internationally renowned scientists. As a state, we strongly support the new research center and its promising approach."
Research Center for Interdisciplinary Tumor Research
The new building will provide Tübingen with a modern research center offering perfect working conditions for interdisciplinary tumor research. The new research building blends in with the existing research corridor near the hospital on the Schnarrenberg.
Flexible laboratories and offices for the scientific work of 18 research groups from different disciplines have been created on five levels with around 4,500 square meters of floor space in the new research center. Communication zones enable creative interdisciplinary exchange among the approximately 250 scientists.
The new building has a high energy efficiency. On the roof and on parts of the facade there is a photovoltaic system with an area of about 500 square meters and a total output of 77 kilowatts peak.
Because of its supra-regional importance, the new research building is being financed with around 21 million euros in federal funds. Half of the remaining construction costs will be covered by funds from the Tübingen Medical Faculty and half by construction funds from the state of Baden-Württemberg. The federal and state governments have jointly invested around 45 million in the new building. The construction project was supervised by Vermögen und Bau Tübingen as the building owner.

Several research group leaders of the Cluster of Excellence CMFI will work in the new building. Among them Lisa Maier (Professorship for Microbiome-Host Interactions) and Hannes Link (Professorship for Bacterial Metabolomics).
