“The silent signals of climate change”

Science

22.05.2025 In the Media

In the journal Science, biologist Colette J. Feehan (Montclair State University) and marine biologist Karen Filbee-Dexter (The University of Western Australia) discuss the article "Turf algae redefine the chemical landscape of temperate reefs, limiting kelp forest recovery".

The authors report that climate change causes not only physical but also chemical changes in marine ecosystems, which, for example, hinder the regeneration of kelp forests through bioactive substances from algae and must therefore be taken into account in future protection and restoration strategies.

Former CMFI junior research group leader Daniel Petras, together with an international team of colleagues, investigated the spread of red algae and the associated dieback of kelp forests.
