Largus Angenent awarded the 2026 Landesforschungspreis

25.02.2026 CMFI News

Lars Angenent, Professor of Environmental Biotechnology at the University of Tübingen and member of the Cluster of Excellence CMFI, has been awarded the 2026 Landesforschungspreis of the state of Baden-Württemberg for his pioneering research into the sustainable use of microbial communities in energy production and environmental remediation. With a total value of €200,000, the prize is the most highly endowed research award in any German state.

Angenent research is focussed on the sustainable use of microbial communities in energy production and environmental remediation. His research focuses on the optimal use of bacteria in gas fermentation, an important source of clean energy for the future. By analyzing the composition and interaction of microbial communities in various environments, such as in hospital air or in fermentation plants, he has gained fundamental insights and successfully translated them into applications. In his own company, he develops and optimizes microbes for storing hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the form of methane, which represents an important step toward a more sustainable energy supply.

About the awardee

Lars Angenent studied environmental biotechnology at Wageningen University. He took his doctorate at Iowa State University in the USA. In 2002 he went to Washington University in St. Louis as assistant professor, after which he was called upon to move to Cornell University. In 2016 he received the Humboldt Professorship and moved to Tübingen. Lars Angenent has been a member of the Cluster of Excellence CMFI since 2019.

The USA National Science Foundation has already honored Lars Angenent with a Career Award. Furthermore he is a Fellow of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET) and received the Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The Landesforschungspreis

Angenent shares the Landesforschungspreis for Basic Research with Professor Irena Kogan from the University of Mannheim. She is being honored for her significant contributions to migration and inequality research. Professor Robert Zeiser from the University of Freiburg receives the Landesforschungspreis for Applied Research for innovative advances in cancer medicine through stem cell transplantation and immunotherapy.

The Landesforschungspreis has been awarded since 1989. Since 1999, the prize has been divided into two categories: one for basic research and one for applied research. The prizes are endowed with 100,000 euros each.
