At the State Press Conference on the 21st of July 2026 in Stuttgart, the 9 universities of Baden-Württemberg state presented a list with 99 research projects for a post-fossil future.

Storing solar power in molecules, replacing fossil fuels by sustainable resources or making industrial processes and agriculture more energy efficient – these are just some of the solutions currently worked on at Baden-Württemberg's universities. One of the 99 funded projects is the Tübingen based project "How to make CO2 a valuable resource" by CMFI Prinicipal Investigator Prof. Dr. Lars Angenent.

At a new research center, the team is developing methods to use CO2 from the air and from industry as a resource instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. Microbes as well as electrochemistry convert COinto plastics or fuels. This way, fossil resources such as oil, coal and gas can be replaced. The project contributes to lower emissions and foster the transition to climate-friendly ways of production. The project is being supported by the Danish Novo Nordisk Foundation.
