The First BIOML Symposium in Tübingen
Students and researchers in bioinformatics and machine learning came together for the first time in Tübingen to meet at the intersection of machine learning, data science & applied biomedical research.
On Friday, June 12th, the Tübingen AI Center hosted researchers and students working and studying in AI-driven biomedical research in academia, the pharmaceutical industry and start-ups for the first BIOML Symposium. The event’s aim was to connect this diverse community and its expertise, highlighting both the frontier of AI and data science in biomedicine and the wide range of career paths that can be taken in this field.
Participants were able to gain fascinating insights into AI and data science across fields ranging from antibiotic discovery, omics data analysis and interpretation to patient-centric perspectives in clinical research and drug development. Beyond exciting AI developments and applications, particularly their potential to accelerate the pharmaceutical discovery and development pipeline, one central challenge became clear: trust in AI technology and its outputs is essential for increasing its impact and use. AI scientists therefore need not only to develop new methods, but also to explain, advocate for and communicate them to the researchers who will later apply them.
At the same time, perspectives from academia and industry underlined the importance of academic research in AI and data science for developing novel methods and technologies that can drive innovation in pharma and beyond.
The event was organized by postdoctoral fellows from the AI & Data Science Fellowship Program between the University of Tübingen and Boehringer Ingelheim, which financially supported the event and contributed several talks and career perspectives to the Symposium.
The strong participation of Bachelor’s and Master’s students was especially encouraging to see. Some of them presented work from their own theses and internships – their engagement shows that the Symposium addressed a real need in the community. The organizers are planning a follow-up event on AI and data science next year, with potential links to the Cluster of Excellence at the University of Tübingen.
