"Paper in a Minute" – New video series from CMFI
CMFI launches new video series “Paper in a Minute”
With “Paper in a Minute” the CMFI has launched a new video series: The series regularly presents outstanding publications from CMFI researchers. The authors summarize their most important findings in a compact, one-minute format, making current research results quickly and easily accessible. Interested researchers can thus immediately assess whether the work presented is relevant to their own research before reading the publication.
Ana Rita Brochado opens the series
Ana Rita Brochado kicks off by presenting a 2024 Nature Microbiology publication in in just sixty seconds. (Brenzinger S, Airoldi M, Ogunleye AJ, Jugovic K, Amstalden MK, Brochado AR. The Vibrio cholerae CBASS phage defence system modulates resistance and killing by antifolate antibiotics. Nat Microbiol 2024 Jan;9(1):251-262. doi.org/10.1038/s41564-023-01556-y.)
The study reveals a surprising mechanism: Antifolate antibiotics activate the CBASS immune system in Vibrio cholerae against viruses – triggering a self-damaging immune response even in the absence of phage infection. This previously unknown mechanism of action could help to use antibiotics more effectively and prevent further resistance developments.
The publication laid the foundation for Brochado's project “BacImmune-Decode – Decoding bacterial immunity to enhance antimicrobial action”, which will be funded in 2025 with an ERC Consolidator Grant worth €2 million.
