Abstract:

Cutibacterium acnes is one of the most common bacteria on human skin and the primary colonizer of sebaceous follicles. Although historically linked to acne vulgaris, recent studies challenge this association and instead highlight its emerging role in implant-associated infections. Two decades after the first genome of C. acnes was sequenced, we now have a deeper understanding of its host-interacting mechanisms. In this presentation, I will explore recent discoveries about C. acnes, including its complex population structure and key host-interacting factors. I will also highlight potentially beneficial compounds produced by C. acnes, such as the antioxidant RoxP. Finally, recent advances in genome engineering will be discussed that open new possibilities for using C. acnes as a chassis for delivering skin therapeutics, supporting ongoing efforts to harness its beneficial properties for improving skin barrier function.
