radioWissen, episode from 21.10.2022: "Sepsis - Wenn jede Minute zählt"

Worldwide, every 4 seconds one person dies of blood poisoning. In Germany it is the third most common cause of death after cardiovascular disease and cancer. However, death can often be prevented—with timely treatment. In this episode, Andreas Peschel explains the role of acetate, one of the body's own metabolic products. Acetate can prevent an infection with a harmless germ from developing into a life-threatening sepsis. This new therapeutic approach may be useful for future drug development and the treatment of multidrug-resistant germs.
