Davina Höll receives German Thesis Award

Davina Höll, Postdoc at the Cluster of Excellence CMFI and Research Scholar at the Institute for Ethics and Histoty of Medicine at the University of Tübingen, receives the German Thesis Award 2021. The prize is awarded by the Körber-Stiftung and honors the best German doctoral graduates in three categories (humanities and cultural studies, social sciences, natural and technical sciences) each year.

Davina Höll, Postdoktorandin im Exzellenzcluster CMFI und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Ethik und Geschichte der Medizin an der Universität Tübingen, steht als Preisträgerin des Deutschen Studienpreises 2021 fest.

Ihre Dissertation "Das Gespenst der Pandemie" erhält den Spitzenpreis in der Sektion Geistes- und Kulturwissenschaften.

 

Davina Höll hat in ihrer Dissertation am Beispiel der Cholera untersucht, welche Bedeutung Literatur in pandemischen Ausnahmezuständen hat. Die Dissertation ist an der Schnittstelle von Literaturwissenschaft und Medizingeschichte angelegt. Ihre These: Literatur verarbeitet das Grauen und schafft ein eigenes Wissen über Seuchen. Sie sei »ein machtvolles Instrument, um der Ohnmacht zu begegnen«, so Höll. Dabei werde die Cholera in den Texten des 19. Jahrhunderts selten explizit benannt, sei als vielgestaltiges Gespenst jedoch umso präsenter.

Die Dissertation ist  im DFG Graduiertenkolleg “Life sciences-Life Writing” an der Universität Mainz entstanden.

Über den Deutschen Studienpreis

Der Deutsche Studienpreis wird von der Körber-Stiftung vergeben und zeichnet jährlich die besten deutschen Promovierten in drei Kategorien (Geistes, und Kulturwissenschaften, Sozialwissenschaften, Natur- und Technikwissenschaften) aus. Neben der fachwissenschaftlichen Exzellenz zählt vor allem die spezifische gesellschaftliche Bedeutung der Forschungsbeiträge: Die jungen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler werden dazu ermutigt, den gesellschaftlichen Wert der eigenen Forschungsleistung herauszuheben und sich einer öffentlichen Debatte darüber zu stellen. Der erste Platz ist jeweils mit 25.000 Euro dotiert. Der Deutsche Studienpreis zählt damit zu den höchstdotierten wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchspreisen in Deutschland. Schirmherr ist Bundestagspräsident Wolfgang Schäuble. Am 13. Dezember verleiht er den Deutschen Studienpreis 2021 in der Deutschen Parlamentarischen Gesellschaft in Berlin.
